29/05/2011

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way flies to number one in the Official Albums Chart and delivers the biggest first week for an album of 2011 so far with over 215,000 sales, more than the rest of the Top 10 combined, the Official Charts Company reports today.

On hearing the news, Lady Gaga responded:  "I feel so honored to have the highest first week sales in the UK this year. I wrote the album's first single Born This Way in Manchester because I was so inspired by the confidence and bravery characteristic of my fans: Little Monsters. To the United Kingdom, thank you for believing in me.”

Born This Way follows Lady Gaga’s debut album The Fame, which was also an Official Albums Chart number one and has sold over 2.5 million copies in the UK alone.  The Fame re-enters the Official Albums Chart Top 10 this week climbing to number seven from last week’s 11. The Fame has now spent a phenomenal 72 weeks in the Official Albums Chart Top 10 since its release in January 2009.

Lady Gaga also impresses in the Official Singles Chart with no less than three tracks in the Top 20; Judas at number nine, Born This Way at 17 and The Edge Of Glory at 18.  Last week she had a phenomenal four singles in the Top 20 – the most Top 20 hits by a solo female artist since Ruby Murray in 1955.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said, “Congratulations to Lady Gaga – she just keeps delivering the hits.”

Adele, who has spent 16 of the last 21 weeks at the top of the Official Albums Chart occupies the next two slots with albums 21 at number two and 19 at number three.

There is just one other new entry in the Official Albums Chart Top 10 as seminal electronic dance outfit Prodigy land the seventh Top 10 album of their career with Worlds On Fire – Live  a new entry at number five.  The band can count a career total of five number one albums to date.  Their only album not to make the Top 10 was their debut Experience released in 1992.

In the Official Singles Chart, rapper Pitbull, holds the number one spot for a second week with Give Me Everything featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer and the Official Singles Chart Top 10 sees three new entries; Romanian singer Alexandra Stan lands her first Official Singles Chart Top 10 hit with Mr Saxobeat climbing from last week’s number 14 to this week’s number five, girl group Saturdays claim their ninth Top 10 hit in just three years with Notorious straight in at number eight and DJ/production team Swedish House Mafia climb from last week’s 11 to this week’s number 10 with Save The World.
