Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle Rule Charts of 2009

03/01/2010

Lady Gaga’s single Poker Face and Susan Boyle’s album I Dreamed A Dream are crowned the biggest-selling records of 2009, the Official Charts Company announces today.
Lady Gaga’s single Bad Romance also returns to the number one spot in the week’s Official Singles Chart.
Bad Romance, the lead single from her newly re-packaged album The Fame, was first number one two weeks ago and gave the twenty-three-year-old New Yorker her fifth hit single of the year, including the number ones Just Dance and Poker Face.
Lady Gaga burst on to the UK’s music scene in January last year when Just Dance, her debut, leapt straight to number one.  Just Dance is at number three in the Official Singles Chart of 2009.  Her debut album The Fame, which spent no less than thirty four weeks in the UK’s Top 10 Official Albums Chart last year, including four weeks at number one, is number two in both this week’s chart and in the Official Albums Chart of 2009.
2009 was also a bumper year for Black Eyed Peas who have three singles in the Official Singles Chart of 2009 and their album, The End, at number four in the Official Albums Chart of 2009.
X Factor winner Joe McElderry’s debut single The Climb is this week’s number two and is also at number five in the 2009 chart – an astonishing feat after just three weeks’ sales.  Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name, which denied McElderry a Christmas number one, is at number eight in the 2009 singles chart.
Forty-eight-year-old Britain’s Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream broke records as soon as it was released scoring the biggest first week sales for a debut album in chart history.  The pace continued and in just six weeks, I Dreamed A Dream has sold over 1.5 million copies to become the best-selling album of 2009 and deny Lady Gaga a 2009 chart double.

Martin Talbot, Managing Director, Official Charts Company said:
“Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle have captured the public imagination and made the charts their own in less than a year. It’s a phenomenal achievement for them both.”
In the week’s Official Albums Chart, it’s a return to the number one slot for Paolo Nutini’s Sunny Side Up which was first number one in June 2009.  The second album from Scotsman Nutini, Sunny Side Up is also at number eight in the Official Albums Chart of 2009.
