After losing out in his epic battle for the Christmas number one to American rockers Rage Against The Machine, X Factor winner Joe McElderry tops the Official Singles Chart for the New Year, the Official Charts Company announces today.
McElderry has sold 196,000 copies in the last week to take the Official number one slot today with his debut single, The Climb, 130,000 units ahead of Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name.
In maintaining its sales through Christmas, McElderry is also moving rapidly up the list of the year’s biggest selling singles. For much of the year, the field has been led by Lady Gaga's Poker Face, which has currently sold around 870,000 copies. The number five position for the year to date is currently held by In For The Kill by La Roux, with around 660,000 sales.
But The Climb sold 450,000 copies in its first week alone – 50,000 sales behind Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name – and has now accumulated around 650,000 sales to find itself on the fringes of that prestigious Top Five.
Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot says:
"The race for Christmas number one was the most exciting many of us can
remember – but, having secured his own number one, McElderry can top his
year off with another honour and has an excellent chance of
making the year-end Top Five by next week."
The last week of the chart year ends at Midnight on Saturday January 2.
