Twenty-year-old Miami native Jason Derülo, one of the hottest new R’n’B stars in the States, makes his mark on the UK with second single In My Head leaping straight to number one in the Official Singles Chart, the Official Charts Company confirms today.
In My Head follows Derülo’s debut single Watcha Say which peaked at number three in the Official Singles Chart in the UK last year having been number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles Chart in America. Watcha Say went on to sell five million copies worldwide.
Derülo first found recognition for his songwriting talents. He composed his first song, Crush On You, at the age of eight. Aged seventeen, he wrote and sang the chorus to ‘Bossy’, a song on southern rapper Baby's album ‘Five*Stunna’. This opened the floodgates, as he became a sought-after songwriter for the likes of P. Diddy, Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston, Cassie, Donnie Klang, Birdman, Iyaz and Danity Kane.
Derülo was discovered on My Space by R.J Rotem’s Beluga Heights label which launched platinum artist Sean Kingston. Super-producer Rotem initially hired Derülo to write songs for Kingston but soon realized that Derülo could be a star in his own right.
Jason Derülo’s self-titled debut album is released on March 1st.
There are two other new entries in the Official Singles Chart Top 10: Ellie Goulding, winner of the Brits Critics Choice Award and BBC Sound of 2010 poll, is straight in at number four with her second single Starry Eyed, and Sugababes are a new entry at number seven with Wear My Kiss. JLS are a re-entry at number ten with One Shot (up from fourteen).
In the Official Albums Chart, Lady Gaga’s multi-platinum album The Fame is back for a second stint at number one having spent four weeks in the top slot back in April 2009. The Fame has now spent 59 consecutive weeks in the Official Albums Chart, 40 of those weeks in the Top 10.
There are three new entries in this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 10: Marina & The Diamonds’ The Family Jewels, straight in at number five, Courteeners’ Falcon straight in at number six, and the iconic Johnny Cash is new at number nine with another in a series of posthumous releases, American 6 – Ain’t No Grave. JLS’s JLS (a former number one) is a re-entry at number eight (up from seventeen).
