James Arthur makes a triumphant return to the top of the Official Singles Chart as his comeback track Say You Won’t Let Go claims this week’s Number 1.

The song notched up 85,000 combined sales (made up of 41,000 downloads and 4.4 million streams) to knock The Chainsmokers’ Closer (2) from the summit after a four week stint at the top. Watch his reaction to the news below:

James told OfficialCharts.com: “This is incredible… I wasn’t in any way expecting it. I knew it was a good song and I thought some people might like it, but if you’d said to me it would be this well received, I would have thought you were pulling my leg.”

James is the second British act to land at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart this year. Back in February, Zayn debuted at the top with his first solo single Pillowtalk.

Say You Won’t Let Go is James’ second Number 1 on the singles chart, following his X Factor winner’s single Impossible in 2012. Check out his complete history on the Official Chart here.

Meanwhile, Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd makes an impressive debut with his new single Starboy ft. Daft Punk at Number 3, and Calvin Harris’ latest track My Way lifts a spot to 4.

New entries and high climbers

Outside the Top 10, Ellie Goulding’s track Still Falling For You from the new Bridget Jones film reaches a new peak at 11, and Matoma & Becky Hill’s False Alarm jumps five places to 28.

Finally, two songs climbs into the Top 40 this week; Dua Lipa’s Blow Your Mind (Mwah) at 38 (up eight places) and Craig David & Sigala’s Ain’t Giving Up climbs three spots to Number 39.

He is trash of the ultimate kind. A slob, a chauvinist pig, and a homophobe without any class whatsoever. On top of that he's an ugly gremlin without any real talent. How can people be buying this? Just a couple of years ago they were demanding refunds for his disgusting behavior.

Really? How come this guy is back? He can't sing, and his music is mopey and boring. The only reason he won X Factor is because of his sob story about his parents being divorced, which while sad doesn't justify being a cruddy singer. He should have remained dropped from his label and faded into obscurity.

How am I wrong? Firstly, this is my opinion, and you have a different one. Those opinions are subjective, and therefore cannot be wrong, as what makes a good singer and a bad singer is in the eye of the beholder. Secondly, as I'm so clearly wrong about this talentless man, tell me how I am so. If not, you don't have much of an argument, so don't be telling me to 'pipe down' when you haven't said anything to refute my arguments, beyond 'you're wrong'. You'd make a great lawyer, you know that? ;)

Last week's overall units for 'Say You Won't Let Go' were 60,000 & they've gone up to 85,000 this week, which means there was about a 42% gain in overall performance for this from last week. James Arthur is also the 2nd X Factor artist to go to #1 on the Official charts this year, as Zayn also did the same with 'Pillowtalk' about 8 months ago! This has been such a great comeback for James Arthur though & I wish him continued success for his next album, 'Back From The Edge'. :)
Speaking of the X Factor, Niall Horan's 'This Town' is definitely going to be a strong contender for
#1 next week. Finally, despite The Chainsmokers losing the top spot today, they have a new song called 'All We Know' which was released today, so it will be interesting to see if that can be another big hit for them in the UK, as I've become a big fan of their music!
