Florence back on top with debut album Lungs

17/01/2010

Florence And The Machine’s debut album Lungs is the new number one in this week’s Official Albums Chart having been in the Top 40 for no less than twenty eight consecutive weeks, the Official Charts Company announces today.
Florence Welch and her band The Machine released their debut album Lungs in July 2009.  It debuted at number two in the Official Albums Chart and stayed there for 5 weeks only held off from the top spot by Michael Jackson.

Three other albums in this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 10 are debuts released in 2009: Lady Gaga’s The Fame at number four (released Jan 2009), Mumford and Sons’ Sigh No More at number nine (released Oct 2009) and Pixie Lott’s Turn It Up at number ten (released Sept 2009).

Meanwhile Mancunian trio Delphic fly the flag for new talent of 2010 with a new entry at number eight for their debut album Acolyte.  Delphic came third in the BBC Sound of 2010 poll which tips the hottest new talent likely to emerge in the coming year.  It bodes well for them.  Florence And The Machine were third in the BBC’s Sound of 2009 poll.  Delphic, who have been described by Q Magazine as a “New Order for the 21st Century”, are currently on their first nationwide tour.

Martin Talbot, Managing Director, Official Charts Company, said:
“It shows how so much of the new talent which emerged last year is here for the long term and if Delphic’s chart debut is anything to go by, 2010 promises to be equally exciting.”
New York indie-pop quartet Vampire Weekend are the highest new entry at three with their second album Contra.  Their self-titled debut Vampire Weekend was released in January 2008, went gold and peaked at number 15 in the Official Albums Chart.

UK rock band You Me At Six’s Hold Me Down is a new entry at number five.  Hold Me Down follows their debut Take Off Your Colours which was Top 30 in 2008.
There are no other new entries in the Official Albums Chart Top 10.
In the Official Singles Chart, IYAZ’s Replay is number one for a second week while the new Channel 4/E4 series Glee makes its mark with two versions of the classic soft rock anthem Don’t Stop Believin’ appearing in the Top 10.  The Glee Cast’s version takes the highest spot at number five while Journey’s original version is at number six.
