Eminem tops the Official Albums Chart with The Marshall Mathers LP 2, and becomes the first American act to score seven consecutive UK Number 1 albums.

Eminem has gone straight in at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart today with his eighth studio full-length, The Marshall Mathers LP 2.

Released as a continuation of the US rapper’s first UK chart topper, 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP, the album is Eminem’s seventh consecutive Number 1 on these shores (including his 2005 Best Of, Curtain Call). This not only means Eminem is the first American act to achieve such a feat, it also puts him on par with The Beatles, who managed an unbroken run of seven UK Number 1 albums in a row between 1963 and 1966. The over-all record is jointly held by Led Zeppelin and ABBA, who have both had runs of eight consecutive Number 1 albums in the UK.

The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which features the US rapper’s Top 40 hits Berzerk, Rap God, Survival as well as the Number 1 smash, The Monster FT Rihanna, is also the third fastest selling artist album this year. With a sales tally of over 143,000 copies,  Eminem’s latest effort sits behind Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories (which sold 165,000 copies during its first week on sale) and Arctic MonkeysAM (157,000 copies week one). Now That’s What I Call Music 85 is the fastest selling album over-all, selling an incredible 262,000 copies during its first week of release back in July.

Meanwhile, 2012 X Factor winner James Arthur is new in at Number 2 with his debut self-titled album, while Tinie Tempah enters one place behind him with his second album, Demonstration (3).

This week’s Top 5 is completed by Andre Rieu & Johann Strauss Orchestra’s Music Of The Night (4) and The OvertonesSaturday Night At The Movies (5).

After clocking up 12 Top 10 albums with Westlife, one of the group’s former vocalist’s, Shane Filan, can add a solo Top 10 to his many accolades. Shane’s debut album, You And Me, enters at Number 6 today.

The Nation’s Favourite Elvis Songs, which was released to tie in with the recent ITV show, is new in at Number 7. The Wanted score their third Top 10 album today with Word Of Mouth, and Avril Lavigne enters at 14 with her self-titled fifth album.

This week’s new entries are completed by The Best Of Nickelback (15), The Very Best Of Bob Dylan (16) and Midlake’s Antiphon (39).
