Congratulations to Ed Sheeran who has gone straight in at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart today with his second full-length album, X.
In doing so, the 23-year-old singer/songwriter has overtaken Coldplay’s Ghost Stories to claim the fastest selling artist album of 2014 so far.
According to Official Charts Company sales data, X (pronounced ‘multiply’), has sold more than 182,000 copies in UK over the last seven days; a cool 14,000 copies more than Coldplay’s opening week tally back in May.
X features Ed’s recent singles One and Sing; the latter of which became his first Number 1 UK single earlier this month.
Sam Smith climbs one place to Number 2 with In The Lonely Hour, while last week’s chart queen, Lana Del Rey, is down to places to Number 3 with Ultraviolence.
This week’s Top 5 is completed by Coldplay’s Ghost Stories (a non-mover at 4) and Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love (up two to Number 5).
There is only one other new entry on the Official Albums Chart today: Atlanta metallers Mastodon score their highest charting UK album to date with Once More ‘Round The Sun. The band’s sixth studio album is new in at Number 10.
Meanwhile, Stevie Wonder’s 1976 classic, Songs In The Key Of Life, re-enters the Top 40 at Number 14. Stevie is set to headline the Calling Festival in London this evening.
An finally, this weekend’s Glastonbury festival is already starting to have an effect on the Official Albums Chart: Elbow’s The Take Off And Landing Of Everything climbs 39 places to re-enter the Top 40 at Number19 today. Home by Rudimental is up 59 places to 24, while Arcade Fire’s Reflektor is this week’s highest climber, soaring 85 places to Number 25.
