But can Castle on the Hill replace Shape of You at the top spot?

The UK cannot get enough of Ed Sheeran's record-breaking new tracks Shape of You and Castle on the Hill, and it looks like his stronghold on the Official Singles Chart will continue this week.

Ed continues to occupy the Top 2 positions midweek, with Shape of You still leading the way (1). The single, originally intended for Rihanna as revealed by Ed, has been downloaded 34,000 times and streamed 3.5 million times in the last three days alone.

Last week, both Shape of You and Castle on the Hill broke the UK's all-time streaming record for most plays in a single week, with Shape of You being streamed a massive 13.4 million times. Ed was also the first artist ever to debut at Numbers 1 and 2 in the same week.

Ed is also the first living British solo act to sit at Numbers 1 and 2 simultaneously. John Lennon was the first British soloist to achieve this rare feat in 1981 just weeks after his death. Click here to learn more about the elite group of artists who have held Numbers 1 and 2 concurrently.

New entries and high climbers

Jax Jones & Raye's You Don't Know Me continues to leap up the Official Chart, up five places to Number 4 today, and new at Number 10 at the mid-week stage are The Chainsmokers with their new single Paris. Featuring uncredited vocals from US singer Emily Warren, the single could become the duo's third Top 10 single following Don't Let Me Down and the Number 1 smash Closer.

More collaborations climbing the chart this week: Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello's Bad Things leaps six places to Number 17, Sean Paul & Dua Lipa's hook-up Don't Lie lifts seven ranks to 21, and Robin Schulz and David Guetta's Shed A Light with Cheat Codes also continues to climb, rising seven positions to 25.

It is also good news for The xx, who look to return to the Top 40 this week with their single On Hold. Previously peaking at Number 38, the track could spring back 41 positions to a new chart peak of 33 following the release of their third album I See You.

Finally, Californian rapper Sage the Gemini could earn his first UK Top 40 hit this Friday with Now and Later, currently up nine spots to Number 34.

over here this week on the bb hot 100, ed made history by being the 1st artist to debut 2 top 10 singles simultaneously in the same week! and that's saying a lot! i've seen artists have 3 top 10 singles in the same week (iggy azalea, usher, chris brown, 50 cent) but ed's feat counts as a 'first-ever' feat :).

Average-sounding week. Shape of You will probably be number 1 for at least a month though...
