After a fierce chart battle, Ed’s romantic ballad returns to the top spot, five weeks after it claimed the longest ascent to Number 1 of any single in Official Chart history.

Thinking Out Loud pipped midweek leader, Union J’s You Got It All (2), to the post by almost 13,000 copies, with nearly 29% of its combined chart sales figure being attributed to audio streams.

Last month Thinking Out Loud overtook Mr Probz’s Waves to claim the title of most-streamed song in a single week, with over 1,638,000 streams in seven days. The track has this week been streamed over 1,672,000 times.

Thinking Out Loud is the fourth Top 40 to feature on Ed’s million-selling second studio album, X.

While Union J score their highest charting single to date with You Got It All (2), last week’s Number 1, Take That’s These Days, slides two places to 3.

Taylor Swift’s Blank Space is up four places to 4, while Olly Murs’ Wrapped Up FT Travie McCoy slips to 5.

Aside from Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud (1.67m), five songs have been streamed over a million times this week; Olly Murs’ Wrapped Up FT Travie McCoy (1.17m), One Direction’s Steal My Girl (1.11m), David Guetta’s Dangerous FT Sam Martin (1.08m), Calvin Harris’ Outside FT Ellie Goulding (1.04m) and Clean Bandit’s Real Love FT Jess Glynne (1m).

New entries

There are three further new entries in today’s Official Singles Chart Top 40.

Bristol-based dance duo Blonde make their Top 40 debut at Number 7 with I Loved You FT Melissa Steel, while Ella Henderson scores a third UK Top 20 with Yours (16).

Ed Sheeran features once again at 38 with Make It Rain. Originally by Foy Vance, Ed recorded the track for the penultimate episode of US television show Sons Of Anarchy.

Elsewhere, Christmas is firmly on its way as seasonal favourites begin the climb the chart. Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You (17), The Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York FT Kirsty MacColl (18) and Wham’s Last Christmas (39) all re-enter the Top 40 this week.
