Digital dominates UK album and single sales

Digital now accounts for almost a third of all UK album sales, according to a report compiled from Official Charts Company data published by British music industry trade body, The BPI.

Digital album sales are up from 23.6% this time last year to 33.1%. Adele’s 21 was the biggest selling album of the first quarter of 2012. Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die is in second place, while Our Version Of Events by Emile Sande is at Number 3.

In the singles market, digital accounts for 99.7% of all singles sold in the UK. 46.7m singles were sold in the first quarter of 2012, up 4.4% on 2011’s first quarter tally of 44.7m.

The UK's biggest-selling single of 2012 so far is Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye FT Kimbra, followed by Titanium by David Guetta FT Sia and Domino by Jessie J. All three have sold in excess of half a million copies so far this year.
