Suffolk born singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran looks set to score his first Official Singles Chart Number 1 this weekend, with Sing.

He’s had 12 Official Singles Chart Top 40s, his debut album, +, spent three weeks at the top of the Official Albums Chart and has sold over 1.79 million copies to date in the UK, but surprisingly, Ed Sheeran has never scored a UK Number 1 single, however that could all change this weekend.

Sing, the first single to be lifted from Ed’s upcoming second album, x, has stormed to Number 1 on today’s Official Singles Chart Update, with the Pharrell-produced track having sold nearly 72,000 copies in the UK so far this week.

Sing currently sits over 47,000 copies ahead of its closest competition, Sam Smith’s Stay With Me, a non-mover today at Number 2. Reigning Number 1, Secondcity’s I Wanna Feel, slides two places today to Number 3, followed by the only non-British artist in the Update Top 5, Mr Probz, who holds firm at Number 4 with Waves.

Completing the midweek Top 5 is the second highest new entry of the week, The Neon Brotherhood’s Hope Ain’t A Bad Thing. The charity single, in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust, is a tribute to the late 19-year-old Stephen Sutton, who raised over £4 million for the charity before his death last month.

New entries

There are four further new entries on the Official Singles Chart Update today.

In at Number 10 is Lethal Bizzle’s The Drop FT Cherri Voncelle, while Kasabian’s Eez-Eh, the band’s first single in over two years, is at Number 18. British producer and DJ, Wilkinson’s Half Light FT Tom Cane enters at Number 21.

Finally, Dutch DJ, R3hab, and Turkish/Dutch DJ Ummet Ozcan have joined forces with Australian duo NERVO for new track Revolution, which sits at Number 29 today.

The highest climber on today’s Official Singles Chart Update is Little Mix’s Salute, climbing 13 places from Number 40 to 27 after its official release last Sunday.
