Can Fergie’s L.A Love end Uptown Funk’s reign at Number 1?

The Black Eyed Peas frontwoman is giving Mark Ronson a run for his money on today’s Update.

Hot on the heels of the Bruno Mars-assisted Uptown Funk – which currently holds the lead - is a new entry from Fergie. The singer’s comeback single L.A Love (La La) is fresh in at Number 2 and trailing Uptown Funk by less than 6,000 copies.

L.A Love is set to be Fergie’s first solo UK Top 40 hit since Big Girls Don’t Cry, which peaked at Number 2 in 2007. In 2010 she topped the charts guest featuring on David Guetta’s Gettin’ Over You.

Meanwhile, Hozier’s Take Me To Church holds firm at Number 3, and newcomer Karen Harding starts at Number 4 with her debut single Say Something.

Breaking the Top 5 after just 48 hours on sale is Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney’s FourFiveSeconds. The all-star collaboration is the first glimpse of Rihanna’s highly-anticipated new music and was unveiled online by the star last Saturday (January 24) before its UK release on Monday.

New entries and high climbers

New at Number 9 is Rhymes by singer Hannah Wants and producer Chris Lorenzo. The track, which was first unveiled last year, samples Daft Punk’s 2005 Top 40 hit Technologic.

Elsewhere, Selena Gomez is on course for her third UK Top 40 hit this week with The Heart Wants What It Wants at Number 15, and The Weeknd lifts from 41 to 35 with Earned It.

Finally, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel’s Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) is new at Number 36 on today’s Update, thanks to Top Gear. The song, which hit Number 1 in 1975, has re-entered the midweek chart following a campaign by Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson in response to the musician being recently handed a speeding fine.

Make Me Smile is currently enjoying a hefty 5,219% boost in sales this week (based on Sunday to Tuesday sales versus the same period last week). The track has been downloaded over 4,200 times already this week, which should lend the 63 year old singer a helping hand in paying off his fine.
