To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Official Charts Company have compiled a Top 20 of the biggest selling singles of the 21st Century by female artists. And you’ll be pleased to know, our very own home-grown talent has come out on top.

Looking at the chart, British artists have the lioness’s share of the Top 20 - 45% - with nine entries from different six artists. Adele, who clocked up the biggest selling album of the 21st Century last December with her second album, 21, is in pole position with Someone Like You. The Tottenham-born star also has two other entries on the chart – Rolling In The Deep is at Number 14, and Make You Feel My Love is at 19.

Former X Factor winner Leona Lewis has the second biggest share of Team GB’s entries with Bleeding Love at Number 6 and A Moment Like This at Number 13. With one track apiece, Alexandra Burke is at Number 2 with Hallelujah, Jessie J is at Number 8 with Price Tag, Cheryl Cole is at Number 9 with Fight For This Love, and recently reformed girl band, Atomic Kitten, are at Number 10 with Whole Again.

The US have the next highest share of the Top 20 with six entries, or 30%, courtesy of four different artists. Lady Gaga has equalled Adele’s number of entries with three tracks on the chart – Pokerface (4), Bad Romance (12) and Just Dance (13) – while Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, and Christina Perri have one track each.

Barbados are in third place on the chart with a 20% share of the Top 20. However, the four tracks that make up that share are all by one lady – Rihanna. However, what is perhaps a bigger achievent for Riri is that sales of We Found Love (Number 5), Only Girl (In The World) (Number 7), What’s My Name? (Number 17) and Umbrella (Number 18) total to 4.4 million - nearly half that of all the British entries combined!

And finally, Kylie Minogue has the sole entry for Australia - Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last October, is at Number 3.
