Boyzone’s new album Brother, their first release since the untimely death of band member Stephen Gately in October last year, leaps straight to number one this week the Official Charts Company confirms today.
Earlier in the week, the new album from Gorillaz, Plastic Beach, had been in pole position for number one, as revealed in the new Official Chart Update broadcast on BBC Radio 1’s Greg James show last Wednesday. But by midnight last night, Brother had gone on to overtake Plastic Beach with total sales exceeding 100,000. Plastic Beach is a new entry at number two.
Poignantly, Brother features some of the last vocals ever recorded by Gately. The four remaining band members, Keith Duffy, Ronan Keating, Shane Lynch, and Mikey Graham completed the album, said Keating, “to pay tribute to Steo.”
Brother is Boyzone’s fifth number one album. They have no less than sixteen consecutive Top 5 singles to their name.
Keating was also number one on Mothers’ Day last year with his solo album Songs For My Mother.
Elsewhere in the Official Albums Top 10 there are two new entries; Amy MacDonald’s A Curious Thing is straight in at number four and the Original Cast Recording of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Love Never Dies is straight in at number ten. Michael Buble’s Crazy Love, number one at the end of last year, re-enters the Top 10 at number six (up from fourteen last week).
In the Official Singles Chart, Tinie Tempah’s Pass Out is number one for a second week. There is just one new entry in the Official Singles Chart Top 10; Justin Bieber’s Baby featuring Ludacris is straight in at number three, the highest UK chart position to date for the sixteen-year-old Canadian. Baby is the lead track of Bieber’s forthcoming album My Worlds set for release later this month.
