Beyoncé’s 4 makes number one as Glastonbury magic works its spell

03/07/2011

Global superstar, singer and actress Beyoncé flies straight to the top of the Official Albums Chart  with new release 4 after her acclaimed performance at last week’s Glastonbury, the Official Charts Company reports today.

4 gives Beyoncé her second solo Official Albums Chart number one after her solo debut Dangerously In Love (2003) and B’Day (number three in 2006) and I Am Sasha Fierce (number 2 in 2009).  All these releases are boosted by the “Glastonbury” effect in this week’s chart with I Am Sasha Fierce powering back in to the Official Albums Chart Top 40 (this week’s number 38 up from last week’s 127).

Beyoncé also makes her mark on the Official Singles Chart this week, scoring her tenth solo Top 10 single (including the number ones Crazy In Love (2004) and If I Were A Boy (2008)) with the second single from 4, Best Thing I Never Had, straight in at number three and no less than five other singles in the Top 75.

As a member of Destiny’s Child she scored a number one album with Survivor (2001) and two number one singles Survivor (2004) and Independent Woman Part 1 (2004).

There are two other new entries in the Official Albums Chart Top 10; Biffy Clyro are straight in at number nine with the Revolutions/Live At Wembley, recorded at their December 2010 gig, and Kaiser Chiefs land their fourth Official Albums Chart Top 10 with The Future Is Medieval straight in at number ten.  Jessie J’s Who You Are is a re-entry at number six (up from last week’s 11) bouncing back for a second stint in the  Top 10 after peaking at number two in February this year.

Jason Derulo hold firm at number one for a second week in the Official Singles Chart with I Don’t Wanna Go Home while the Official Singles Chart Top 10 sees just one other new entry in addition to Beyoncé’s Best Thing I Never Had at number three as Katy Perry’s Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) climbs to this week’s number nine (from last week’s 11).

Coldplay is another act to benefit from a powerful Glastonbury performance as their single Every Tear Drop Is A Waterfall, which peaked at number six last month, storms back up the chart to number ten (from last week’s 42).  They also see their albums jump back up the charts with  A Rush Of Blood To The Head leaping from last week’s 176 to this week’s 44, Parachutes from 184 to 48, X&Y from 178 to 55 and  Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends from 169 to 52.

Other artists to benefit from their appearances at Glastonbury by jumping more than five places in the albums chart are:

17 to 12 Chase & Status – No More Idols
26 to 17: Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
29 to 20: Noah & The Whale – Last Night On Earth
