The Swedish DJ and producer continues trend for big-selling Number 1 singles.

After clocking up the biggest opening day’s sale of any single in 2013 this week, Avicii’s Wake Me Up FT Aloe Blacc is looking like a dead cert to take the Number 1 spot when the Official Singles Chart is announced this Sunday.

After just three days on sale, the dance track has already sold 153,000 copies, that’s more than the previous four Number 1 singles sold in a full seven days! If Wake Me Up continues to perform this impressively, it is on course to be the fastest selling single of 2013, breaking the record set just 8 weeks ago, when Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines sold 191,000 in its first week. Wake Me Up is the second Number 1 for Avicii – also known as Tim Bergling – previous single I Could Be The One, which featured DJ Nicky Romero, reached the no.1 spot in February this year.

It was recently revealed that Avicii has been working on new material with legendary producer and guitarist Nile Rodgers, who, alongside Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams, also enjoyed a massive Number 1 single earlier this year in Get Lucky. With two Number 1 hits already under Avicii’s belt within the last year, and a collaboration with Nile Rodgers on the way, we’re certainly expecting to see a lot more of him on the Official Singles Chart.

The second-highest new entry at this midway stage is 20 year-old Disney actress Selena Gomez at Number 4. Come And Get It will be Selena’s first UK hit as a solo artist and her highest charting single to date. The on-off love interest of Justin Bieber has previously appeared in the Top 40 with her band Selena Gomez & The Scene, reaching Number 7 in April 2010 with Naturally. Can Selena hang on to her current chart position to secure a new personal best by the time the final placings are revealed on Sunday? We're giving you the chance to win tickets to Selena's Stars Dance World Tour in our latest competition. make sure you check it out.

After five non-consecutive weeks at Number 1, Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and TI slips into the runner-up slot, John Newman’s Love Me Again, falls one more place to Number 3, and Icona Pop’s I Love It FT Charli XCX completes the Top 5.

New Entries and High Climbers

Aside from Avicii (1) and Selena Gomez (4), there are five other tracks making their debut in the Top 40 in this week’s Official Chart Update.

New at Number 7 is Breach’s “sleazy” house track Jack, the first Top 40 hit for the alter ego of DJ Ben Westbeech. Canadian pop-rocker Avril Lavigne makes a return to the chart with Here's To Never Growing Up entering midweek at Number 10. If she manages to hold on to her current position, it will be Avril’s first Top 10 hit for six years – When You’re Gone reached Number 3 in 2007. Her personal best is Girlfriend from the same year; the track peaked at Number 2.

Also brand new at Number 18 is former X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan with Lighthouse. The Sheffield singer was the first ever X Factor star to score a Top 40 single and album before the live rounds had even aired last year. The chucklesome self-penned audition song Last Night reached Number 11 on the Official Singles Chart and Top Room At The Zoo peaked at Number 22 on the Official Albums Chart, both in September 2012. Watch our interview with Lucy Spraggan, where she talks about Lighthouse and reveals her dilemma over what to call her album.

London rapper K. Koke could be about to score his second Top 40 hit – My Time FT Bridget Kelly is new at Number 40 midweek. His previous outing in the Top 40 was Lay Down Your Weapons FT Rita Ora, which peaked at Number 18 in March this year.

Climbing 13 places to enter the chart for the first time at Number 36 is Thinking About You from Calvin Harris FT Ayah Marar. The track is the ninth single from Calvin’s chart-topping third album 18 Months. In April, the Scottish DJ and producer set a new Official Singles Chart record for the most Top 10 hits from one album, when his last release, I Need Your Love FT Ellie Goulding, climbed to Number 7. The record was previously held by Michael Jackson, who clocked up seven Top 10 hits from his 1987 album, Bad, and another seven Top 10 hits from 1991’s Dangerous.

Following a storming set at London’s Yahoo! Wireless festival, Jay-Z’s collaboration with Justin Timberlake, Holy Grail, moves up nine places to Number 15. The song is the opening track of Jay-Z’s latest album Magna Carta Holy Grail, which topped the Official Albums Chart last week, giving Jay-Z his first ever Number 1 album in the UK.
