Apple are discontinuing their iPod Nano and Shuffle range of products

The iPod Touch is now the only iPod model on the market.

After years of being outsold by the iPhone, Apple's iPod range has been reduced to just one model following the announcement that two others will be discontinued.

Apple will now only stock and manufacture the iPod Touch following the decision to cease production of the iPod Nano and Shuffle variants.

With their vibrant colours and smaller price tag, the iPod Nano was for the years the most popular incarnation of Apple's MP3 player collection. Before the Nano was removed from Apple's online store (it will no longer be available in retailers either) the device sold for £149, while the Shuffle was the cheapest of the line at £49.

The death of the Nano and Shuffle follows Apple's decision to no longer make the iPod Classic, the product inspired from the original iPod concept, a system that was famous for its 160GB hard drive. The disk space of this product is a reason why the iPod Classic has shot up in price on the second hand market since it was discontinued.

"We are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod Touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199," explained an Apple representative.

The two models of iPod Touch now available are 32GB and 128GB variants prices at £199 and £299 respectively.

The decision to simplify the iPod range is not only down to higher sales of the iPod Touch and the advent of Apple Music; across the world, the music download market has slowed. Here in the UK, sales of digital albums are down 24.1% this year, while UK record labels make less money from downloads than they do physical sales, streaming revenues and public performance.
