Adele shrugs off all competition for seventh successive week

13/03/2011

Adele’s multi-platinum album 21 claims a seventh successive week at the top of the Official Albums Chart, the Official Charts Company confirms today.

21 notched up weekly sales of over 160,000 more than twice that of its nearest rival, Build A Rocket Boys, the fifth studio album from Elbow, which makes its chart debut at number two and gives Elbow the highest charting album of their career so far.  Build A Rocket Boys follows Elbow’s double platinum and Mercury Prize winning Seldom Seen Kid which peaked at number five in 2008.

The Official Albums Chart Top 10 sees another three new entries all from established acts. Veteran American rock band REM secure their eleventh Official Albums Chart Top 10 hit with Collapse Into Now straight in at number five.  It is 26 years since REM first appeared on the Official Albums Chart with Fables Of The Reconstruction which peaked at number 35.  They have sold almost 10 million albums in the UK alone.  Indie folk band Noah & The Whale’s third album Last Night On Earth is straight in at number eight and Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne’s fourth album Goodbye Lullaby is straight in at number nine.

Meanwhile Adele’s debut album 19 holds at number four while her single Someone Like You tops the Official Singles Chart for a fourth successive week.  Adele’s single Rolling In The Deep also stays in the Official Singles Chart Top 10 though slipping four places to this week’s number nine.

The top four placings in the Official Singles Chart are unchanged from last week while the Official Singles Chart Top 10 has just one new entry; American rapper Wiz Khalifa’s debut single Black And Yellow is straight in at number five.
