Adele claims Top Two albums, as Gwyneth scores Glee hits

27/02/2011

Adele this week scores two Top Five singles and two Top Five albums for the second successive week, spurred by the impact of her Brit Awards performance two weeks ago – the Official Charts Company reports today.

In the Official Albums Chart, she scores an impressive one-two, with her new 21 album holding on in the Number One slot, while her previous release 19 moves up into second place.

In the Official Singles Chart, Adele is at Number One again with Someone Like You, which sold more than 110,000 copies for the second week in succession – while Rolling In The Deep is at number four.

It is the first time for almost 12 years that one act has held the top two places in the Official Albums Chart. Back then, in March 1999, The Corrs’ Talk On Corners held first place, with Forgiven, Not Forgotten in second.

It is also a week after Adele set another record - becoming the first living artist to achieve the feat of two Top 5 hits in both the Official Singles Chart and the Official Albums Chart simultaneously for 47 years, since The Beatles back in January 1964; their singles I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were numbers two and five, while their albums With The Beatles and Please Please Me were numbers one and two.

The impressive performance by Adele underlines the continuing impact of the Brit Awards. Brit Awards performers account for seven of the Top 10 biggest albums this week, as reflected by the Official Albums Chart.

The other story of the week is the impact of Glee and Gwyneth Paltrow’s emergence as a Top 40 artist for the first time. The latest Glee abum, Volume Four, arrives at four in the Official Albums Chart, while Paltrow’s performance in last week’s show results in two singles featuring her – Singing In The Rain/Umbrella and Forget You – arriving at 22 and 31 in the Official Singles Chart.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot says, "Adele is proving to truly be THE star of 2011. Her album has already become the must-have release of the year and for Someone Like You to top 100,000 sales for two successive weeks demonstrates what a huge hit it is."
