...Says guest blogger Emy McLeod from HMV’s Glasgow store.

It has been quite a month of British artists breaking into both the Official Album and Official Singles Charts. There has been the Number 1 single from X-Factor runners-up One Direction. Their debut release ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ headed straight to the top spot, only to be knocked off pole position by N-Dubz frontman Dappy the following week.

Moving over to the Album Chart, Kasabian’s much anticipated follow-up to 2009’s ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’, ‘Veliociraptor!’, shot straight to the top, as did the debut album from new-kid-on-the-folk-rock-block, Ed Sheeran. Last week saw Surrey rockers You Me At Six go head-to-head in attempt to take the Number 1 spot from James Morrison in the Albums Chart with their latest offering ‘Sinners Never Sleep’. Come Sunday You Me At Six charted at Number 3, behind James Morrison and the seemingly omnipresent Adele, whose album '21', has remained in the charts for an impressive 37 weeks.

Earlier this month Glasgow was taken over by the MOBOs. London girl Jessie J went on to win not one, but four awards including Best Album and Best Newcomer. Jessie’s album, ‘Who You Are’, was released in February and has been in the Album Charts for 32 weeks.

So what British artists have upcoming releases to look forward to? Will there be a release to top Adele? In reality, probably not, but there are still many exciting new albums set to hit the shelves of HMV over the next few weeks.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds are set to release their eponymous debut album next week, as is 2010 X-Factor winner Matt Cardle with his first album, ‘Letters’ (he’ll be doing in-store appearances at a number of HMV stores up and down the UK, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled). And did I mention the upcoming head-to-head battle with X-Factor runner-up Cher Lloyd and boyband The Wanted? They're both going to release their albums early November. But who will come out on top?

Speaking of chart battles, One Direction will be releasing their debut album at the end of next month, the same week as chart topping Irishmen Westlife. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if fans camped out overnight to get their hands on the first copies of each of those albums. After all, there’s more than a few people online who have tattoos of certain band member’s names on their skin.

This certainly is an exciting time for the UK music industry!
